Fuck yeah to the kids who feel like they’re dying inside but still gather up the strength to roll out of bed, get dressed, and leave the house. You are strong and beautiful and worth so much more than you know.

Quick assignment for the NY Times Letters to the Editor, out in today’s paper. The topic is about the recent Supreme Court decision to strike down abortion clinic buffer zones on the grounds of “free speech” (you can read the original article reporting the decision here, and the Letters section here). Previously, protesters had to stay 35ft away from the entrances to abortion clinics (a distance at which they were still able to exercise their ‘right’ to scream and harass) but now they will be allowed to do it directly in the faces of women seeking medical treatment.

Thanks to my AD Nathan Huang. This was an assignment I felt pretty strongly about. If the Letters section wasn’t neutral ground, you can bet I would have drawn the protestors differently in this piece.

Hi, this is my best friend, Sammi.

Sammi is a green cheek conure that went missing around 6-7pm on the 17th of July, 2014. He got startled and flew into some woods behind my house in Flora Park.

If anyone in the Yulee, Fernandina Beach, Amelia Island, or Jacksonville, Florida area spots him, please notify me immediately.

He is an average sized conure. He is mostly green with white and black around his neck and some of his chest. There is a small patch of rust-red feathers on the lower part of his belly. His tail feathers are red. The inside of his wing feathers are blue. His feet are a mixture of gray and pink.

He knows how to say his name (albeit poorly) as well as “Step up!” and “Whatcha doin?” but tends to be shy about speaking around strangers. So if you hear him, it will probably just be screeches or squawks.

He loves sliced apples and may fly to you if you have them. He dislikes men and will fly over and attack them.

Or contact me here.

Please, please, please signal boost. I know the likelihood of tumblr finding him is slim, but I will do anything to know he is safe.

if you hate autism you hate autistic people

autisticdrift:

Why is this so hard for people to grasp?

I can’t count how many times I’ve seen parents say “I love my kid but I hate his autism.” I call bullshit. You can’t say that you hate something that is an intrinsic part of a person, that affects nearly every aspect of their being in some way, and then say you still love the person. What you love is an idealized fantasy version of the person that doesn’t actually exist.
